NBA denies disciplining referees over betting violations

/2007-10-22/

The National Basketball Association has denied reports that it had disciplined six referees for violating its anti-gambling rules for officials. A spokesperson for the NBA added that commissioner David Stern would share all the details of its internal investigation into the NBA's officiating programme once it was complete.

Rumours started circulating after the New York Daily News reported over the weekend that the league has disciplined a number of referees as part of former federal prosecutor, Lawrence Pedowitz's investigation in the wake of the Tim Donaghy scandal.

Stern recently told reporters in London that some violations had been uncovered, but they were not 'hanging' crimes.

He continued by saying that Donaghy, who is facing up to 25 years in jail after admitting betting on games that he had officiated, was a 'rogue, isolated criminal'.
